Meet the New Hope Animal Hospital Team

Dr. Clay Leathers

Dr. Clay Leathers grew up in Villa Rica, Georgia.   He received his undergraduate degree from the University of West Georgia and was the first student to be accepted into the UGA veterinary program from that college.  Dr. Leathers attended the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching College and graduated in 2006.  He opened New Hope Animal Hospital in 2012 with his wife, Dr. Valerie Leathers, after practicing for 6 years in Carroll County Georgia.  His favorite veterinary cases are dermatology, internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, and orthopedic surgery.   He also contributes to Paulding County rescue groups and organizations.

Dr. Leathers and his wife met in Athens and now live in Dallas with their three sons, which keep them busy! They have 2 dogs, a golden retriever and a Jack Russell terrier, and a feisty long hair cat named Tybee.    Even though they are both UGA graduates and football fans, they are happy to see any pets that have other collegiate alliances!  Clay is pictured with their 2 dogs, Jackson and Scott.

Dr. Valerie Leathers

Dr. Valerie Leathers grew up in Conyers, Georgia.  She went to the University of Georgia and received a biological science degree in 2002.  She then attended the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching College and received her veterinary doctorate in 2006.  Valerie knew at a young age that she wanted to be a veterinarian and started working in veterinary offices at the age of 17.  After graduating from veterinary school, she worked in the Douglasville area for 6 years.  Her favorite cases are internal medicine cases.

Dr. Leathers and her husband met in Athens and now live in Dallas with their three sons, which keep them busy! They have 2 dogs, a golden retriever and a Jack Russell terrier, and a feisty long hair cat named Tybee.    Even though they are both UGA graduates and football fans, they are happy to see any pets that have other collegiate alliances!  Valerie is pictured with the picture of her cat Tybee (as any cat owner can appreciate, Tybee only comes to the vet office when necessary, not for photo ops).

Dr. Laura Mackey

Dr. Mackey grew up in Fayetteville, Georgia. She attended the University of Georgia for undergrad and then attended the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine. She went on to complete a small animal emergency and critical care internship at the Veterinary Emergency Center in Richmond, Virginia. After completion of her internship, she moved back to Georgia to practice emergency and critical care medicine at Cobb Emergency Veterinary Center in Marietta, Georgia. She spent 4 years there before she began doing relief for New Hope Animal Hospital in March of 2017. She then realized the possibilities of having a normal schedule and became full time veterinarian at New Hope in October 2017. Her interest is in emergency and critical care, soft tissue surgery, and wound management.

Dr. Mackey currently lives in Smyrna, Georgia with her fiance, Greg. She loves the beach, traveling, working out, and spending time with friends. She has two dogs, Kona and Guinness, and three cats, Dusty, Hennessy, and Julep.
